The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) generates flood maps as a tool for local communities to identify which areas have the highest risk of flooding. In 2018, FEMA began a Flood Risk Study of the Farmington River Watershed, which included the Town of Farmington and other Hartford County communities, in order to update the current flood maps as necessary.  The study utilized improved hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, new topographic and aerial imagery, and revised modeling.  From this information, new floodplain characteristics were generated and preliminary flood maps were created.  They are now available for public review.  Here is a link to the FEMA Flood Map Updates Guide.

If your property is located in or is in proximity to a flood zone, watercourse (stream, brook, river, etc.) or wetland, the revised maps are important to review as they may impact your property. FEMA published a legal notice on February 28, 2024 detailing the beginning of a 90-day appeal period. Property owners may appeal map revisions to FEMA during the 90-day appeal period ending on May 28, 2024. The following is a link for information for more information on appeals. The effective date for the new finalized maps is tentatively scheduled for late 2025.  The exact date will become set further into the map update process.

Quick Links and Helpful Hints to Access the FEMA Flood Maps

1. To view the preliminary flood map changes for your property, please follow the link found here. Input your address in the "Find address or place" search bar (include "Farmington, CT" when inputting your address such as, "123 Main Street, Farmington, CT"). If your address is not found, utilize your zip code only and then you can pan to your neighborhood and property.

    

2. The map will zoom to your property with all the flood change layers turned on. You can view the names of each layer by clicking on the "layers list"  button in the upper right corner. The layer "Preliminary Changes Since Last FIRM Layer" will display the areas where the flood zone was deleted or added. The layer "Preliminary National Flood Hazard Layer" will show you the entire preliminary flood map for the property. 

    

3. There is also a legend button  next to the layer’s icon. The legend provides information on what each color is on the map. Disregard the Coastal High Hazard Areas. There are none of these in Farmington.

4. If you are having difficulties navigating the site you can also use the following link to access the individual maps directly: Preliminary FEMA Maps. Select from the drop-down menus (1) State of Connecticut, (2) Hartford County, and then select (3) “Get Preliminary FEMA Map Products”. Below is a list of the “FLOOD INSURANCE RATE MAP (FIRM)” for the Town of Farmington. Select the PDF symbol in the far-right column for your particular map. The file sizes are fairly large and may take some time to download depending on your internet service.
