The Town of Farmington Green Efforts Committee is excited to announce the on-line sale of compost bins through the end of May.  Information regarding the sale can be found at www.enviroworld.us/farmington. 

Need more information on composting? In support of the sale, the Green Efforts Committee will be hosting a series of discussions to introduce to introduce the community to composting as part of their compost bin initiative. Each discussion will have a Guest Speaker who will explain the benefits and importance of composting as well as best management practices for a successful composting experience.

  Speaker: Steve Silk
  Steve Silk became interested in plants more than 30 years ago, during extended travels in tropical South America and Southeast Asia. Some of the tropical plants seen during his journeys, along with hundreds of other plants from all parts of the world, now grow in his ever- expanding Farmington, CT garden. Steve is an award-winning photographer and his photography has garnered two Garden Writers of America awards for best portfolio. He has also appeared several times on HGTV’s “Gardening by the Yard.” A past President of the Connecticut Hardy Plant Society and the Connecticut Horticultural Society, Steve currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Farmington Land Trust.

  Lorren Pogson was born and raised in Farmington, CT and grew up farming with her family on Mountain View Farm. Lorren earned an Associate Degree in horticulture and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Natural Resources Management from the University of Connecticut. She has served the community as a commissioner on the Farmington Conservation Commission and Farmington Inland Wetlands Commission and as Farmington Memorial VFW Post 10361 Post Commander. In 2011, Lorren opened Maizey’s Market Farm Stand in Farmington, which offers a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Speakers: Rodger and Isabelle Phillips

Rodger and Isabelle Phillips operate Sub Edge Farm, which grows 10 acres of vegetables, fruits, flowers and culinary herbs in Farmington and Avon. The mission of Sub Edge Farm is to provide the local community with nourishing food, to promote healthy lifestyles, to encourage a loving stewardship of the land, and to strengthen the local economy. Rodger and Isabelle work hard to involve the local community in the operation of Sub Edge Farm through regular farm tours, presentations, classes and workshops. They also offer a 100 share Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and hold a weekly farm store on the premises.
