Farmington prides itself on a strong and vibrant business community, boasting more than 2,000 registered businesses. From corporate headquarters, to industry, to sole proprietorship, the Town enjoys a diverse collection of commercial enterprises. Farmington has one of the largest Class A office space inventories in the greater Hartford region, as well as a large inventory of industrial commercial space. 

Farmington's five largest employers represent insurance, healthcare, retail  and manufacturing. 

The University of Connecticut Health Center is the Town’s largest employer and a leading academic research institution in CT.  In 2011 Governor Malloy made an $864 million dollar investment in Bioscience CT, an economic development initiative aimed at making CT one of the leaders in bioscience research and discovery. Bioscience CT  will make University of Connecticut Health Center  a hub of research and clinical work in bioscience arena.

TRUMPF is the largest manufacturer of fabricating machinery in the U.S. Headquartered in Farmington,

United Technologies, listed Among Barron’s list of the World’s Most Respected Companies, completed extensive renovations to their campus and moved their headquarters to Farmington in 2015. 

Macy's is one of the leading retail chains in the United States. The company operates around 810 departmental stores and furniture galleries. It has outlets in 45 states as well as the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. The retail chain offers a range of products for men, women and children. It provides products under categories, including home, bed, bath, beauty, fragrance, shoes, jewelry, watches, handbags and accessories. Macy's offers brands, such as Hush Puppies, Oscar De La Renta, Ralph Lauren and Simmons.
