Part-time Fire Fighter

The Town of Farmington Fire Department will consider eligible candidates for the position of Part-Time Firefighter.

  • The hourly pay rate is currently $20.00 and is dictated by the Town Manager’s Office
  • Part Time Firefighters are offered shifts to cover for absent Career Firefighters or for additional staffing when needed
  • Part Time Firefighters will be on a probationary period for 12 months

Applicants who wish to be considered for the position of Part Time Firefighter should submit ALL of the following to:

  1. Town of Farmington Employment Application which may be downloaded here.
  2. Copy of Firefighter 2 Certification, IFSAC or ProBoard (and any advanced fire certifications).  
  3. Copy of Current Emergency Medical Technical Certification.
  4. Copy of American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider Certification (and any advanced medical certifications or licenses).
  5. Copy of Connecticut Class 2 license with Q Endorsement or CDL-B with Tanker Endorsement
  6. Copy of Successfully attained CPAT Card within the last year, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  7. Copy of Training Record(s) listing all training classes and/or drills that the applicant has completed since November 1st, 2018 illustrating the completion of the 15 training requirements listed below.  

Those candidates who are offered a conditional offer of employment will be required to pass a background check, drug test, and physical exam prior to appointment. 

 Training:

Part Time Firefighters are required to maintain the required training and certifications in order to remain eligible to serve as a TFFD Part Time Firefighter. Part Time Firefighters will be required to submit documentation, which can include up to lesson plans and/or drill sign-in sheets, on November 1st of every year illustrating the completion of the following 15 training requirements:

  1. Incident Command
  2. Hazardous Materials
  3. Infectious Disease Control
  4. Safety and Protective Equipment
  5. Chemistry of Fire and Behavior
  6. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
  7. Fire Streams
  8. Hose
  9. Pumping Fire Apparatus
  10. Ladders
  11. Rescue
  12. Forcible Entry
  13. Ventilation
  14. Emergency Vehicle Operations
  15. Live Fire Training

These 15 training requirements can be attained through training at the TFFD or through training at a fire department they hold an active interior firefighter status with.

Additional Information for Part Time Firefighters

Those candidates who are extended a conditional offer of employment will be required to pass a background check, drug test, and physical exam prior to appointment. Part Time Firefighters will be required to follow the medical evaluation requirements per TFFD Directive #56, Medical Evaluations.

Personal Protective Gear, to include Turnout Gear, will be supplied to the Part Time Firefighter to be utilized when on duty with the Town of Farmington Fire Department. Gear will meet the specifications of NFPA, TFFD Directives and will be required to be maintained in good working condition by the Part Time Firefighter. An SCBA face mask will be issued to the Part Time Firefighter and will be required to conduct a fit test annually to ensure proper fit as required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 as specified in TFFD Directive #10, Respiratory Protection. Part Time Firefighters will follow the same requirements as Career Firefighters with regards to annual Firefighter Performance Evaluations as stated in Directive #71, Firefighter Performance Evaluation Program.

Part Time Firefighters will be required to conduct daily inspections, administrative details, firehouse chores and respond to calls for service while on duty. The Part Time Firefighter Job Description illustrates the expectation and requirements of the position.

Direct supervision of the Part Time Firefighters will be the Volunteer Fire Chief of the fire station in which they are assigned for the duty shift
